From the letter and spirit of the August 4 presidential broadcast, it is clear that the Nigerian leader is out of tune with his people. And the national intelligence system is bereft of genuine intelligence. To bridge that gap, I have undertaken to break down in very simple terms what the protesters really want. These insights hold the key to ending ongoing demonstrations and unrest:
1. Pres. Tinubu must lead by example by cutting the salaries, allowances and privileges of all public office holders. The people want to see sacrifices from their leaders, not leaders who loath sacrifices but expect sacrifices from the people.
2. Government must make tangible commitments to wrestle down inflation, especially by supporting local refining to lower energy, transportation and food costs. Not giving handouts.
3. Sack top management and probe financial dealings of NNPC. It has become the new symbol of national decay.
4. Stop milking the led to fund the lifestyle of leaders. Ensure level playing field for all Nigerians.
These 4 action points encapsulate what the people mean by #EndBadGovernment, “We are Hungry” and “Bring back fuel subsidy” The latter must not be interpreted literally. Let’s not get it twisted once again.
