July 28, 1914 : Beginning of 1st World War.
Austria-Hungary used the assassination of the Austrian Archduke : Francis Ferdinand as a pretence to present an unacceptable ultimatum to Serbia and declared war on the Slavic country, thus sparking off the first World War.

July 30, 1975 : The military government under General Yakubu Gowon was toppled in a military coup that brought in General Murtala Mohammed as the new military head of state in Nigeria.

August 5, 1762 : Russia, Prussia and Austria signed a treaty, agreeing to the partitioning of Poland.
