Government Secondary School Owerri, Imo State emerged the 1st Runner – up for the award of the Best Public Secondary School in Nigeria.
The president Teachers and Schools Excellence Award (PTSED) award organized by the Federal Ministry of Education was presented to the school during the celebration of this year’s World Teachers day held in Abuja on the 5th of October 2020.
Speaking with the Principal for the Senior Secondary session Rev. Jamike Eke in his office who received the award on behalf of the school expressed delight over the award stating “it is well deserved”. The school was assessed through its administrative style, infrastructure, academic performance, sporting activities among others. The School produced a pictorial brochure of the school that helped in their success.

Government Secondary School Owerri, Imo State has won the 2nd best Public School award in the country organized by Federal Ministry of Education.
The first position went to Government Secondary School in Ondo State.
The award ceremony was held at Eagles Abuja to mark this year’s World Teachers’ day. The principal of the School Rev Jamike Eke was on ground to receive the award. He was accompanied by the Secretary Imo State Secondary Education Management Board Barr Mrs Obiageli Anyikude and two members of the school’s old boys Sir Jonny Okoronkwo & Mr Okechukwu Ndeche.
Government Secondary School Owerri located along Okigwe road near the new fire Service was established in 1935. Since inception the school has been famous for high performance in academics, sports, morals & discipline.
The assessment for the best Public Secondary School in Nigeria was based on the following: Structures, Administration, Leadership, Academic performance, Awards received Publications, Inventions by students, Sports and Cultural performance.
The Principal Rev Jamike said teamwork, focus, hard work sacrifice, discipline and fear of God contributed in their winning the award. He also said the old boys of the school contributed immensely especially in the areas of structures. The principal thanked them and encouraged them not to relent.
He described the old boys of the school as the best compared to other school where he worked as principal.
The school was given certificate signed by the Federal Minister of Education, a giant refrigerator & a laptop as prizes.
The principal commended his co Principal Mr Mba Okwara of Junior Secondary, the staff, students and the old boys for making this great achievement possible.
He said they will not relent as they will work harder next time to come first. He said he is doing everything possible to make sure the school comes first in WAEC & NECO Exams.
In his own response, Mr Mba Okwara the Principal Junior Secondary School said he feels great being part of the award as this has given him an edge over his colleagues in other schools.
Some of the teachers interviewed expressed their joy on the award and appealed to the Government to pay them salaries that are being owed since March 2020.
The two principals of the school (Senior & Junior) commended the efforts of the Government but said there are still more expectations. They appealed to the government to provide the school with more teachers especially those subjects that don’t have enough teachers compared to the student’s population. Other areas they need assistance from the government are: providing more furniture, renovation of the laboratories, the assembly hall & hostels.
Rev. Jamike the Principal Senior Secondary appealed to the governor to make the school a priority school in terms of providing the school with those basic things that will make the school out as model for other schools.
The students were also happy because they said it happened in their own time.
The school captain Theophilus Emelayo speaking on behalf of the students said the award has made them to be more proud now. He encouraged the students not to relent in whatever good they will do to make the school always stand out. The students appealed to the government to repair their roads, provide more security men, and build pedestrian bridge in front of the school gate or put zebra crossing to avoid students being knocked down by moving vehicles. They also requested for toilets at SS 2 block.
The Old Boys Association of the school led by Dr Joseph Nnorom received the news with joy & commended the Principal, staff & students for the wonderful performance. They appealed to them not to relent & always strive to maintain the good name of which the school is known for. They pledged to always remember their great Alma – mater.
