The days of reveilles and bugles by Chinwe Ezeanya

Do we not deserve an autonomous government?
With an honest referendum?
Not the constitutional crooks of the rock
 Is democracy a fairy-tale?
A long-deserved interregnum

For how long shall we observe
The Evita’s of the Junta’s consort?
Even as we are humbled by the mumblings of our bellies
In this our belligerent nation
Conscripts of corruption in the aggression of man versus man

We all are interred from audible expressions
As we are left with varying interpretations
Simply expressing hunger, discomfort and frustrations
As the fullisade goes off continuously
Rather than a salvo for some honors

Even at the slightest upheaval
Our armories are turned on us
Rather than used to keep peace
When will this armistice become a treaty?

I will rejoice the day reveille and bugles awake us
To the fantasized dream of democracy
(Written in 1993 in the tumultuous dark days of the Junta’s reign in Nigeria.
And today in the year 2020, I still affirm that I will rejoice the day reviles and beagles awake us to the fantasized dream of democracy.)
