I stood between the Pillars of Hercules
Looking unto the lamp of Heaven
In the direction of the silver streak
With the father of the waters behind me
The chanticleer crows
And I mutter the Paternoster
To this great union about to hold
As the bird of Jove emerge from the Land of the Leal
I see the Juno of the fairer sex
Gaze unto the sterner sex with the sheep’s eyes
An April gentleman soon to be
In a morganatic engagement to the flower of the flock
A cockney with the sinews of war
The wizard of the fourth estate
A baker’s dozen ahead in age
Jubilating John Bull in his inner man
Even as he stands erect as Gibraltar
And his fairer as Ceuta
As the limbs of the law
The bird of peace anchor on each pillar
I see sweet Ceuta blush so fairly like the bird of Juno
As the land of the Leal shed its Adam’s ale
To the sweet smell of the tamarind
Even as the lamp of heaven bows low and out.
